Cat enclosures are safe, secure outdoor spaces for cats and their owners to share. They are not cages. Sometimes they are referred to as cat runs, catios, cat havens or cat sanctuaries.

In Canberra cats born after 1 July 2022 have to be contained.
This means cats can have access to the outdoors provided they are in a secure space that keeps them on the property. It does not mean pet cats have to be locked inside with no access to the outdoors.
The following suburbs are cat containment areas where cat owners are required to keep their pet cats on their premises at all times:
Bonner, Coombs, Crace, Denman Prospect, Forde, Gungahlin Town Centre east, Jacka, Lawson, Macnamara, Molonglo, Moncrieff, Strathnairn, The Fair at Watson, Throsby, Taylor, Whitlam and Wright.

Under the Domestic Animals Act 2000 penalties of up to $1500 apply to cat owners who allow their pet cats to roam freely in designated cat containment suburbs.
